Quang Tri is reviewing project progress and investor capacity to implement 12,963.4 MW of planned generation by 2030, while addressing transmission bottlenecks.
According to VietnamPlus on October 2, 2026, Quang Tri is tightening power project schedules and reviewing investor capacity. The revised Power Development Plan VIII provides for 12,963.4 MW of generation by 2030; including existing generation, total capacity is projected at around 14,491 MW.
Provincial Party Secretary Vuong Quoc Tuan called for projects to be grouped and detailed plans prepared, linking progress to monthly disbursements and weekly checks. Applications for investment policy approval must be completed in October, or by early November 2026 at the latest.
The province has 40 commercially operating power plants with over 1,464 MW and 1,524 rooftop solar systems with more than 148 MW. Six projects are under construction but face site clearance difficulties, while 27 have investors but have not started construction. The province identified 17 delayed energy projects; obstacles include land issues, changes in forest land use, grid connections, electricity prices and financing.
EVN estimates that Quang Tri will need to transmit around 13,700 MW by 2030. Generation connected to the 110 kV grid is expected to increase by more than 2,400 MW, posing overload risks on some lines. The province is advancing the Quang Tri 2 500 kV switching station, the Lao Bao–Quang Tri 2 500 kV line and the Lao Bao 500 kV substation. The line is approximately 34.58 km long, with investment exceeding VND 1,258 billion.
EVN forecasts provincial demand of around 792 MW in 2030, compared with projected generation capacity of 14,491 MW, or 18.3 times demand. This gap calls for greater transmission capacity beyond the province and the attraction of industries with high electricity consumption.
